My Unique Christmas Ornaments

Some of you may have noticed that I've been MIA lately and for that, I apologize. My fiance and I have recently been entrusted with the care of two little ones, a boy age 4 and a girl age 3. We received these little angels a bit unexpectedly and as you can imagine, it was quite an adjustment. Although my 7 and 9 year old have been very helpful, I have forgotten just how much work the little, little ones can be!

That said, I hope everyone is having a fantastic time decorating, holiday shopping, and making Santa lists. This is my FAVORITE time of year (not favorite weather, but what is Christmas without that freezing wind that threatens to rip the skin right off your bones?)...in fact, my sister says that during the holidays, the 'elf' comes out in me. It's true...I have the Christmas spirit.

One of my favorite family traditions is ornament gifts. Each year, the kids get a special ornament from Mom and Dad, and Mom and Dad give each other a special ornament as well. Aside from that, if I see a unique ornament, I HAVE to snatch it up. I have a bit of an unnatural obsession with ornaments, especially if they are different than the typical Christmas ornament. I thought it would be fun to show you some of the ones I've collected over the years.

Just after Hurricane Katrina, a couple in Key Largo sent my family a Christmas 'love' package, and this ornament was in the box. I was in love with it immediately and it has been on my tree every year since.

I have a bit of a thing for peacocks, and I saw this lady online and HAD to have her.

I saw this ship ornament at a local boutique store and we made eye contact...it was love at first sight.

This little Santa was at Michael's when I was shopping for crafts. It was so glittery; it beckoned to me from across the store. Look at Santa's sweet little face!

Review of Kidzsack: The Eco-Friendly Backpack You Can Color!

Art is super important to me, whether it's painting, drawing, coloring, sculpting, writing - any kind of art.

I honestly believe that children benefit when they're exposed to many different kinds of art, and when they're given the freedom to be creative and to try many different kinds of art. When I was given the opportunity to try Kidzsack, I was so excited!

What is Kidzsack?

Kidzsack is a backpack created from 100% eco-friendly materials, including recycled plastic bottles. The outside of the backpack has a printed picture for your child to color. You can pop it in the wash and your child can color it over and over again.
There are several different designs you can choose from, including a sports theme, a jungle scene, a beach picture, and more. We received the ballerina kitties scene to try out. (Total WIN for my daughter, who snapped it up immediately!)

How'd We Like It?

The Kidzsack comes with 8 non-toxic markers that your child can use to color the picture, which I thought was super-neat. Sure, it's just markers, but the fact that they're included is a mini bonus for this product.The kiddies went right to coloring (with made-up rules that my son was only allowed to color the leaves and surrounding pictures while my daughter colored the cats. Yep, they made up this rule because a.) my son thought he was too macho to color cats in skirts and b.) my daughter wanted the privilege of doing that!)

I loved the fact that they had so much fun coloring the bag. They worked together until they had the picture filled in and colorful. In fact, my son was already asking me to buy a boy-themed bag for him. I had reservations, though. See, one Christmas, my daughter got one of those bears you can write on and then wash...except when you put it in the wash, all of the marker didn't come out.

I figured the Kidzsack would be the same way, but I was wrong. It looked brand new when I took it out of the washer. (Lazy Mom Confession: I didn't look for washing and drying instructions so I was hesitant to place it in the dryer. I just let it dry flat on the counter rather than risk the dryer.) The kids loved it, which is what I really look for in any product that is designed for kids. It's not enough for the moms to think it's a great idea - the kids must love it too!

The one thing we did notice is that the bag is quite small. If your kids are in pre-school or kindergarten, it would be perfect but for bigger kids that have to carry folders and books - it's probably not going to be large enough. That didn't matter here, because my daughter used it as an overnight bag when she went to stay the night with her grandparents. After that, she shoved little girl make-up and various other things in it and has been carrying it around ever since.

Funny Friday #2: "Tell Them I'm the Gardener!"

When I was in 5th grade, I tried out for cheerleading. We had to stay after school, and our parents were supposed to pick us up a few hours later. I should first tell you that the school I went to was filled with kids who came from upper-class families. Everyone drove the newest shiny cars, all the kids had the nicest clothes, etc.

So, the day before the tryouts, our car breaks down and has to be taken to the shop. "What are we going to do?" I asked, over and over. "Oh, we'll figure something out," my parents answered. I should also tell you that our neighbor, and one of my dad's good friends, drove this truck - if you want to call it that.

Let's just say that if it had been a horse, it would have had to be shot. It was several different colors, slathered in Bondo, had broken mirrors and the sound...it was what I imagine the apocalypse might sound like.
After the tryouts, my friends and I walked toward the front of the school, where the car-riders got picked up at.

We were sitting there chatting, laughing and carefree, when I heard it. It came from around the corner..."PUTT-PUTT-PUTT-PUTT." The ground practically shook with the noise. Immediately, I knew...this sound was somehow for me. Son of a horse, I thought. I looked around quickly, calculating my chances of escape.

It was too late. That *truck* pulled around the corner, looking like absolute death warmed over - like the evil ghost of something that used to resemble a vehicle. My eyes automatically went wide and I looked to either side of me. This is where everything turned slow-motion. I could see one of my friends' eyes get wide too, and sloooooowly, she mouthed, "OH MY GOD."

I wanted to die. I didn't move for a few minutes, but there was my dad in the driver's seat, waiting for me. Shit. I thought about running, but looking at his face, I changed my mind and stood up with all the courage of someone going to face their horrendous, torturous death. Now, if it was bad until this point, it gets even worse. Why, you ask? Because the passenger side door on this monster did not open.

This meant that right there, in front of my friends, my father had to get OUT of this thing, and let me climb through the driver's side, before he got back in and pulled away. While I was dying a thousand deaths of embarrassment, my father got out of the vehicle. Obviously, something showed on my face...

...because my dad looked over at the kids, and then back at me. He whispered encouragingly, "Just tell them I'm the gardener." Thanks, Dad. I'm sure that'll work. To this day, he believes it was a character-building experience...I believe it's the cause for deep-rooted fears involving Bondo and gardeners.

Little Handfuls: Can You Handle the Cute?

Recently, I won a giveaway hosted by a woman named Liza Adams. The giveaway was for a beautiful little bear named Peaches. I was instantly in love...

I should tell you that I have a bit of a thing for bears. Before Hurricane Katrina, I collected tiny bear figurines - little bears wearing Halloween costumes, daddy and mommy bears, Valentine's bears...I had a ton of them. After the collection was demolished, I never really picked it back up again, but after discovering Little Handfuls, I think I may have to start all over again.

About the Artist:

Liza Adams is a mommy of 3 from New Zealand, and began needle felting about 6 years ago when she purchased a kit from a local craft show. I think it's safe to say she found her calling, because her bears are absolutely precious!

Now, I won't even pretend to know how needle felting works, but I think these bears have a distinct look that makes them so much cuter than the majority of 'teddy bears.' In addition to that, Liza manages to give every single one of her bears a different personality...

This is Cinnamon. Doesn't she look like she's waiting patiently for you to join her tea party? I love those eyes, with so much personality and sweetness.

Meet Bella and Buddy. I absolutely adore that little hat and those big feet! Buddy is probably one of my favorites...he's just so darn cute. He definitely demands an "awwww!"

Funny Friday #1

It might make me a terrible mother, but when my kids were smaller, I loved hearing them mess words up. In fact, it was very difficult for me to correct them because they sounded so darn cute.

For instance, when my son wanted to say 'basketball,' it came out 'spacketball.' Or, 'balloons' were 'abloons.'

When we were teaching him about 'clocks,' he somehow made it come out sounding like 'fuck.' We'd say, "Where's the clock?" and he would point excitedly at the clock on the wall, shouting, "Fuck, fuck!" We'd point to the numbers for him and count them out - "1, 2, 3..." and so on.

We were shopping one day, and my son was in the front of the shopping cart. We maneuvered around the crowds of people to get to the produce section and my son spotted the fruit and vegetable scales. Thinking they were clocks, he points very excitedly and starts screaming, "FUCK, FUCK, Mama. FUCK!" Being so used to him saying this for clock, and immediately knowing he was referring to the scales that he thought were clocks, I nodded enthusiastically and said, "That's right, man!" and I give him a high-five.

When I looked up, several people were staring at me and one older woman was looking at me as if I were the scum of the earth. It registered then that these people were seeing me vigorously encourage my 2 year-old to curse like a sailor. With burning and bright red cheeks, I turned to my son and began immediately correcting him...what I should have been doing all along. "CL-ock. CL-ock, Christopher."

With bright eyes and what was evidently a great desire to get it right, he said very slowly, "C-ock."

Del Monte Freeze and Eat Fruit Chillers ReviewTubes

It's HOT...so very, very hot. There's nothing better (just ask my kids) than a yummy popsicle on a hot summer day. However, most popsicles are basically nothing but sugar. Sure, this is fine once in a while, but when your kids are like mine and bounce off the walls at 90MPH when they've had too much sugar, you start to look for alternatives.

When I spotted the Del Monte Freeze and Eat Fruit Chillers, I thought, hmmm. So I decided to buy them and try them out on *the* pickiest critics alive - my 2 lil muffins. Here's what we thought:

Price: The price is ok. You get 8 in a pack for around $1.99 - as opposed to probably 20 regular popsicles in a pack for the same price. My kids like to have these as 'after school' snacks, so I can almost make a whole week with one pack, or 2 bucks...BUT they never last this long! Ha!

Taste: I didn't just rely on my kids' for the taste test, because I enjoy a great popsicle now and again as well. ;-) In comparison with regular popsicles, the Del Monte Freeze and Eat Fruit Chillers win hands down! Whereas a normal popsicle tastes like frozen kool-aid, these taste like frozen fruit smoothies. We bought the Strawberry Snow Storm and they were very full-flavored and delicious.

Nutrition Comparison: The calories in a normal popsicle and the Fruit Chillers are about the same - around 50. However, the Fruit Chillers are actual frozen fruit sorbet, so you get some good vitamins in there as well. For instance, the Fruit Chillers have 25% Vitamin C, whereas popsicles have 0 Vitamin C.

The Fruit Chillers have 1g of dietary fiber, whereas the popsicles have 0. Popsicles have about 3g of Carbohydrates, while the Fruit Chillers have about 13g of Carbs. Also, the Fruit Chillers have about 50g of Potassium, while popsicles have 0.

We haven't tried the other flavors yet, but I can't wait. All in all, I love these and I think they're a great way to get in a bit of fruit instead of just a ton of sugar. The taste is definitely better than popsicles, and although the price is a little higher, I believe it's well worth it! I'd highly recommend these for your little ones...or even yourself!

Hypothyroidism: One Little Problem and a Ton of Big Symptoms

I've recently been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, and after researching, have discovered that it's much more common that I originally thought. In fact, many people (especially women) suffer with some degree of hypothyroidism and don't even know it.

I thought it would be a great idea to share my story, and maybe it will help others out there who may be experiencing the same symptoms I did...

What is Hypothyroidism?

Your thyroid is a gland that controls many different things in your body, mainly your metabolism. Hypothyroidism means that this gland isn't producing enough hormone to control those necessary processes. Many times, this happens due to an autoimmune disorder that causes your antibodies to attack the thyroid gland. Sometimes it can happen due to thyroid cancer, or other conditions that leave the thyroid damaged.

Symptoms I Experienced:

I'll start by saying that for many, many years, I have been unable to tolerate cold. When others in the room were comfortable, or hot even, I was wrapped up in blankets with my teeth chattering. Sometimes, I would feel 'bone cold,' meaning I was just absolutely cold all over and couldn't seem to get warm at all. During these occasions, the only thing that seemed to help was a hot bath - and I took LOTS of those.

Another thing I noticed for many years was that I didn't sweat like other people...most things that would cause others to start dripping barely affected me. I thought I was blessed - ha! Also, there were times when I would just be completely tired - as if my batteries suddenly drained, leaving me absolutely fatigued. However, other than this, I felt okay. I didn't have much trouble maintaining my weight, even when I wasn't actively doing any exercise programs regularly.

However, several months ago, I began to feel really ill. I noticed that my concentration went from excellent to not-so-good to completely non-existent. I was grouchy, tired ALL the time, and always cold. Now, when I say tired all the time, I don't mean I felt like sleeping. I don't mean I could have taken a nap and that I felt lazy. I mean that it was HORRIBLE - it was an effort to move...just getting up to walk across the room felt like an insurmountable chore. This does not work when you have 2 children...and so on top of feeling terrible, I felt guilty because it was all I could do to muster up the energy to give them meals, etc.

I didn't think too much of this, because I've always had issues sleeping at night. I figured it was just catching up to me. Soon after, the muscle cramps started. It started with a few muscle 'spasms' - what felt like a charlie horse in different parts of my body - arms, sides, etc. Within a few weeks' time, I was having a very difficult time with anything. Putting on a shirt or buckling my seat belt would make muscles in my arms and sides 'seize' up, and it was incredibly painful.

I had also started gaining weight - this I blew off, thinking...I'm getting older, I work at home on the computer...I just need to exercise more. I also had a few really bad migraines...I mean, I thought I'd had migraines before those headaches, but apparently not. These made me feel like my skull was going to split open, and I was actually vomiting throughout both of them. It was the muscle cramps that really got to me. I started to think something was really wrong. One day (after the realization that I needed to exercise more), I decided to go for a walk. I got my MP3 player and took off out the door. I didn't get very far at all (embarrassingly) before my legs didn't want to work anymore at all.

Both of my legs became so exhausted...it was like I was losing the ability to use them. It was terrifyingly painful. I turned around and began to go home. I honestly wasn't sure whether I would make it home. My legs were in so much pain and it felt like I was walking around on tree trunks. It was hard to bend them, and each time I moved them, the muscles screamed in agony. When I did make it home, I was in tears. My family thought perhaps it was because I didn't exercise regularly. This didn't sit right with me...sure, I wasn't a marathon runner, but I have 2 kids so I'm fairly active. My little 'walk' didn't even amount to the number of steps I would take to run in the grocery store and grab something for dinner - and I felt completely paralyzed.

I can confidently say that by this point, more than one of my family members probably thought I was going nuts. Still - I called the doctor and made an appointment. A friend of mine pointed out that lack of potassium could cause muscle cramps and fatigue, and I thought there was a possibility I was anemic. When I explained to the doctor what was going on, I was told that there was probably nothing wrong with me - I was 27 years old and fairly healthy. She said that I might need more calcium, but she agreed to do blood work.

When the blood work came back, and the doctor told me that my thyroid numbers were low, I was so relieved. I was so thankful that there was a name for what was wrong with me, and that it could be controlled. However, she told me that most people don't complain about muscle aches and cramps when they have thyroid issues. Interestingly enough, after doing my own research, I found that it was one of the most commonly listed symptoms.

Medication

So, I was started on Synthroid 25mg. 5 weeks later, a blood test showed I was still too low. I was moved up to 50mg. Another blood test revealed that I was still too low. I was moved up two more times, and am now taking 100mg a day. I will have another blood test in a few weeks to determine whether my numbers are good or I need a higher dosage.

Within a few weeks of taking the Synthroid, the muscle aches were completely gone - a HUGE relief. However, it took much longer for the pain in my legs - every time I walked, I had that same exhausted, horrible pain in my legs. Now, I still feel it occasionally, but it's nowhere near as bad. I've also started to lose the extra weight I gained. I feel fairly okay, but I am still having some weird symptoms.

One of them is random swelling and pain - I've had this happen in my feet, my fingers and wrists, on my sides (near my ribs) and in my knees. It happens out of the blue, and the affected area turns red and hot, along with the pain and swelling. Most of the time, it goes away overnight. This is something I plan on discussing with my doc at my next checkup, and I guess I'll have to hope that she is willing to look into it. I also get extremely tired still, from time to time, but I still have more energy than I did have. Overall, I'd say I feel about 70% better - but I'm still working on 100%.

All THAT From One Little Problem?

This is what I was thinking - how in the world can one little problem cause so much pain and so many symptoms? For a while, I was really thinking that there was something SERIOUSLY wrong with me. I expected to get some horrible diagnosis...I was even scared to visit the doctor. But hypothyroidism can cause so many symptoms - it's just unreal. In fact, if it's left untreated for a long time, sufferers can actually go into a fatal coma. Some of the most common symptoms are:

Feeling tired, fatigued - This can range from just fatigued to being so low on energy it's debilitating.

Gaining weight.

Loss of concentration.

Muscle aches/pains.

Irritability

Being intolerable to cold.

Menstrual irregularities.

Constipation.

Headaches/Migraines.

These are just a few of the common symptoms. I really recommend you read this article, which goes into the many bodily processes that are governed by or directly affected by the thyroid. I am so glad that I'm feeling better, and I hope that as we get the proper dosage of medication going, I'll feel even better than this. With hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism being so common, many women could be feeling horrible and blaming it on not enough sleep or the need for more vitamins.

A Bit of Funny:

While none of this is really funny, I have to point out some of the differences I've been experiencing since taking the medicine. I found out that I am not blessed and that I DO sweat. I also don't experience that 'bone cold' feeling anymore - and lately, I've felt our Southern Mississippi heat more than I care to. I will suddenly start fanning myself and saying, "Geez! Is it hot in here to everyone else?" That's when my loving sweetheart yells, "It's just your thyroid kicking in!" Ha! It's actually NOT my thyroid kicking in - it's the medicine, which I'll most likely have to take every day...forever.

Another thing I've noticed is that my metabolism has definitely increased...I am hungry. A lot. I guess this is okay, since I'm still losing weight.

If you're experiencing the symptoms above, have your doctor do a blood test and check out your thyroid performance. Because many doctors don't have the commitment necessary to really find out what's wrong with their patients (especially when initial tests come back clean because hypothyroidism can be difficult to diagnose), it may be necessary to shop around for doctors, or to find a great endocrinologist. This may be what I have to end up doing. I'll keep you updated on how I'm feeling, and in the meantime will hope that this post might help someone who could be having thyroid problems and not know it!

2 Meals Under $10 + How to Save Money on Groceries

Whether you're a victim of our economy (who isn't?) or you're just cheap like me, saving money on groceries and other needed items is a definite PLUS. Lately, my lucky guy and I have been discussing ways to place even more money than usual in savings, so that we have it when it's most needed.

One of the things we'd like to save money on is eating. We've already started the process by limiting the amount of times per month we eat out, but we still spend a chunk of change each week at the grocery store.

Thinking about it caused me to try and come up with recipes that are good, but are really cheap. Below are just 2 of the recipes that I've been using. They're really good, but it costs $10 or less to make them.

Meat and Veggie Pie

This is my kids' favorite meal, and they're super-picky! It's also really good for the meat and potatoes guy.

Ingredients:

2 cans roast beef and gravy (found in the canned meat section, about $6)

1 can mixed veggies ($.75)

3-4 cups prepared instant mashed potatoes (about $1)

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (about $1.50)

Open the cans of roast beef and gravy and spread it over the bottom of a casserole dish or baking pan. Then, drain the mixed veggies and spread that on top of the meat. Next, layer the mashed potatoes on top of the veggies and season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle the cheddar cheese on top of the mashed potatoes. Place in a 350-degree oven until the cheese is thoroughly melted. Prep time and cook time is about 25 minutes total. If you try this recipe, let me know how you like it!!

Super-Easy "Homemade" Chicken Pot Pie

Another favorite, and so easy to make.

Ingredients:

1 Whole Chicken (about $5 total)

1 diced and cooked potato (about $.50)

1 diced and cooked carrot (pennies)

1 can of peas (about $50)

1 can cream of chicken soup (about $1)

1 serving Jiffy pot pie biscuit mix (about $.75 to $1.00)

3/4 cup milk (pennies)

Cook the whole chicken in boiling water for 1-2 hours. Pick the meat from the bone and preserve anything over 1 and 1/2 cups to use for another meal. After you've diced and cooked the carrot and potato, add this to the chicken in a large bowl. Add half the can of peas and the cream of chicken soup. Add 1/2 to 1 cup of water and stir so that your mixture is creamy. Salt and pepper to taste. Mix the Jiffy mix (about 1 cup) with the milk. The consistency will be thin. Place the chicken and veggie mix into a baking pan and pour the Jiffy mix on top. Place in a 375-degree oven for 1 hour.

Tips for Saving Money on Groceries:

Food is mucho expensive. Until I get to the point where I'm growing all of my own veggies and completely shunning meat of any kind, I'm using a few different methods to save money at the grocery store. First and foremost, clip coupons. You don't have to use EVERY coupon; just the ones that cover products that you're definitely going to use. If your store has double or triple-coupon days, go shopping then and you can save tons of money. I've actually ended up getting free products using this method.

For some items, I buy store-brand rather than name-brand. Granted, some store brands simply will not work, but some things are okay to do this with. For instance, I've found that cereals, milk, canned veggies, syrup, etc. are all okay in the store-brand. However, I absolutely must have name-brand teabags, coffee, sauces, and other things like that.

Always save your leftovers. At the end of the week, have a hodge-podge meal containing all the leftovers. This is a great way to shave some money off your grocery bill. Also, thinking cheaper when you create your grocery list can help. Plan out your meals one week at a time, and buy only the things you've put on your list. Some stores also price-match, so if they have the same item that a competitor has on sale, they'll match the competitor's price. I'll Never Forget Sunscreen Again...

Saturday, Mr. Muffin (who wishes to be known as something much more macho...and so I've chosen Mr. Cornbread, but not the sweet kind) and I packed up the kids and headed to the local water park for his company's summer picnic. On the way there, I gave the children copious amounts of sunscreen and pointed out all the missed spots.

When we arrived, I quickly slapped some sunscreen on my arms but by then the kids had already turned into rabid animals and were pulling me in several different directions, shouting about slides and lazy rivers and magical sprinkling firetrucks.

So...I didn't put sunscreen on my chest, shoulders, face, or back. We were there from 10am until about 4pm and the whole time, my skin was roasting like a buttered chicken on the grill. I should also point out that I am a freckled, extremely fair-skinned individual. Luckily, the sunburn isn't too severe (no blisters, etc.) but it still hurts!

In fact, sleep last night would have been almost impossible if I hadn't been completely exhausted. I purchased some pure aloe vera gel, and have been rubbing that (gently) into my skin every few hours. In honor of my stupidity, I'm posting some natural sunburn remedies that you may or may not find helpful if you ever forget the sunscreen. Let me know if you've tried any of these, or if you know of a remedy that's better than the ones I've posted!

Milk - Most of the sites I found recommended milk, as it's great for any kind of burn. I imagine that the cold temp of the milk would also feel really good against the skin, and help let the heat out of the burn. Most places recommend soaking clean gauze in milk and then draping that across the burn.

Vinegar? - Seriously. To me, this sounds very hurty, but I don't know. I'm too chicken to try it. Have any of you tried vinegar for a sunburn?

Aloe Vera - My treatment of choice, since that's what I grew up using. You can use either the pure aloe vera gel (purchased from any drugstore) or actually break a piece of the plant and squeeze out the juice. I used the gel, which I bought for about $5. It's very cooling, and is supposed to help the burn heal faster.

Vitamin E - Squeeze the gel right out of the caplets and spread that on your skin, or purchase a cooling lotion with lots of vitamin E in it. Since this is the ultimate skin vitamin, I can see how this would work.

Tea Bath - Create a tea bath by running some warm water in the tub (not too hot, as that will probably really hurt!) and use tons of teabags. I have those huge gallon-sized tea bags that I bought at Sam's, but regular teabags will work too. You just need a lot. Throw those suckers in the tub and let them steep for a few minutes before getting in. Tea has a lot of great antioxidants and will soothe your skin.

In addition to these remedies, most people recommended taking some ibuprofen to relieve the pain. AND...loose clothing! In fact, I found the biggest, thinnest shirt I could find and have been using that! So...here's to a speed skin recovery, and don't forget to share your thoughts.

Review of Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

First, I'll send a thank you out to Rachel C., who recommended that I read this series. It's technically a young-adult series, but don't let that label fool you. This book is extremely entertaining...and quite graphic at times, I must say. On with the review...

Katniss Everdeen is a sixteen-year old girl who lives in District 12 (part of the ruins of North America, and governed along with 11 other districts by The Capitol.) She's a tough girl who takes care of her mother and little sister, Prim, and has been since her father died in a mine explosion. Long ago, District 13 attempted to rise up and rebel against The Capitol, and in that attempt, was destroyed.

The Hunger Games are not only for entertainment, but to serve as a reminder for the other districts what happened to District 13. Every year, each district must give up one boy and one girl to fight in the televised Hunger Games. Here's where the shady part comes in - the districts are poor...very poor, while the people in The Capitol have more than enough. The children in the districts can get extra food by entering their name another time in the drawing for the Hunger Games. Every child of a certain age must enter their name in the drawing each year anyway.

Poor Kat's name was in there quite a bit, but at least she had the peace of mind knowing that her little sister, Prim's name was only in there once. As luck would have it, Prim's name is called and Katniss volunteers to go in her stead. Also called is a baker's son, Peeta, who harbors a secret crush on Kat. Let the Hunger Games begin...

Peeta wins favor with the audience by revealing his little crush, and Peeta and Kat's mentor quickly realizes that the audience is eating up the story of the star-crossed lovers. The games have 26 contestants, and only one is allowed to live. Sponsors can donate to the teams, so that the mentor can send in things that are needed at any particular moment.

***SPOILER ALERT*** - Scroll over the following parts to read:

Kat deals with injuries, the death of a good friend, and so much more along her journey, but always keeps in mind that she has promised Prim that she'd come home. Will she make it out alive, returning home to the wonderful life Hunger Game winners are entitled to, or will she simply give up?

One of my favorite parts is the end, when Kat and Peeta outsmart The Capitol. They change the rules halfway through the game, telling the contestants that there can be 2 winners this year. This fuels Kat's resolve that she and Peeta can make it out alive. When they're the only 2 contestants left - guess what - The Capitol changes the rule again. So, Kat and Peeta "resolve" to eat poisonous berries, continuing their roles as star-crossed lovers. The Capitol is forced to intervene and save the 2 of them, sparing themselves from the wrath of the audience. Now that Kat gets to go home, will she return to the quiet, faithful Gale, or will she have to keep up with her 'romance' with Peeta to please The Capitol?

This book was absolutely fabulous. I really enjoyed it and couldn't stop reading until I had devoured the entire thing. It's one of the most well-written books I've read in a long time. The writing is crisp, imaginative, and descriptive. In fact, the very moment I finished with it, I had to rush out and get the 2nd in the series, which I'll also be reviewing soon. I am in serious pain about waiting until late August to get my hands on the 3rd book, but it's a bittersweet pain.

I highly recommend this book if you like adventures, a bit of romance, and if you admire tough heroines.

I know, I know...they sound a little bizarre, but I can't tell you the levels of awesomeness contained in these stories. Definite MUST reads!!

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley

WHY: If you're enamored by tales of King Arthur (ooooh - I am, I am!) you MUST read this book. It's a completely different version of the King Arthur tales, told by the points of view of the women in his life. The story is told by Morgaine (Morgan le Fay) and I love this book so much I've read it multiple times. Each new time, a different layer is uncovered or a different meaning is discovered.

I can't wait to hear which books you think I should read and why...and I'll let you know which ones I've chosen and what I think of them. Also, please let me know if you read any of the above books...

Sorry it's been so long since I've posted...you know how you can be sitting somewhere doing something and it feels like 5 minutes have passed but you glance at the clock to realize 2 hours has passed and you have no idea where the time went? That's kind of what happened - but on a larger scale!

Between the kids getting out for the summer and the end of the year activities, as well as work and all the other little things that fill up a day, I'm often left wondering how time has suddenly started speeding away. I remember when I was little and looking forward to something - the weekend, the summer, and then later my 18th and 21st birthdays. Time used to pass soooooo slowly that I couldn't stand it.

Now, it seems to be running away from me faster than I can catch up with it. Just last week, the kids were toddlers. A few days ago they were starting school. I feel like I've blinked and now there are these awesome kids with their own distinct personalities, and I'm not quite sure where they came from. I'm glad to have them, though!

I thank you for being patient with me, and hope you'll join me for the upcoming posts. I have some book reviews coming up, giveaways, and other great miscellaneous stuff. In the meantime, tell me below what you've been doing in the past month!

Review of EcoStore Spray Cleaner and Lemongrass Body Soap

Choosing products that are eco-friendly has become easier for me in the last few years. Not only have I learned a lot more about those products (mainly because of the work Priceless Writers does with eco-friendly companies), but because they have become more available.

When EcoStore sent me their citrus spray cleanser and their lemongrass body soap to try, I was thrilled! With 2 kids and 2 dogs, you can bet that I have more than a few messes on my hands each day - and I absolutely love lemon-scented things...from lotions to soaps to perfumes. So, I invite you to read below and see how these products measured up!

EcoStore Citrus Spray Cleanser:

One of the places I clean most often is the master bathroom - which also happens to be the bathroom my 7 year old son uses. Anyone with a small boy knows that the toilet has to be cleaned VERY regularly! I usually use something like Lysol spray or a cleaner with bleach.

This means the smells are extremely strong...not to mention the harsh chemicals included in those cleaners. One of the first things I noticed about the EcoStore cleaner is that it smells great! It's not an overpowering smell (like bleach) - it's fresh and very clean-smelling.

I used it like I use the other cleaners - I just sprayed it on, let it sit for a few minutes, and wiped it away with a wet cloth. It worked wonderfully. Since it passed the 'toilet test,' I decided to give it a more difficult job. I sprayed down the tub and sink (which often has toothpaste stuck to the bowl - thanks kids) and guess what - it passed those tests with flying colors! I have used this cleaner in the kitchen on the countertops and stove, in the microwave, and to wipe down the dishwasher and refrigerator.

I'm extremely pleased at how it works - and the biggest benefit is that it contains no harsh chemicals. It's been independently proven to kill e.coli, staph, and salmonella, and it's naturally antibacterial. Bonus: the bottle is completely recyclable because it contains no metal parts!

Overall, I was very pleased with this product and would certainly recommend it to anyone - and already have, in fact!

Lemongrass Body Soap:

I've mentioned before my commitment to use eco-friendly and NAT URAL soaps, so trying the Lemongrass soap was a treat. It feels rich and smooth when you lather it up, and makes suds galore.

The lemon smell is very subtle, and it washed away leaving the skin smooth and clean. I really love this soap and as it says right on the box, it contains no nasty chemicals - including toxic petro chemicals, no animal fats or tallow (hooray), no synthetic dyes, no sodium lauryl sulphate, and no propylene glycol.

The soap is created with vegetable glycerine and essential oils that are wonderful for your skin. I absolutely loved it, and would recommend that anyone (especially those with sensitive skin) try this soap!

Bethany - There are no truer words to live by - LOL. I love that your mom doesn't sugar-coat things and a sense of humor is such an important trait.

Carapace - I had a similar tradition with my grandma when I was young and used to spend summers at her house. She didn't spend a lot of money on those excursions, but the memories have stuck with me for years - longer than any memories of 'things' that were purchased for me. An adventure for children is definitely needed once in a while, and bless your mom for realizing that!

Sydney - This was such a touching story for me. I know that you feel really special knowing that your mom was so moved by her love for you that it gave her the strength she needed. There are lots of times when I'm motivated by my kids! :-)

Esmerelda - It was such a sweet and funny memory that you shared! I love how we recall the simple and funny things that have occurred over the years with our families and parents. Those memories are the glue that holds families together!

Diana - Mothers sure have a way of making their children feel important and special. Sometimes it takes a while to realize that while the world doesn't revolve around us, our mothers' worlds certainly did when we were children - and thanks to the moms for that!

J.E. - That's such a great tradition...and one that I share with my kids now. It's 'our' time and we cherish it!

Dor - That sounds really familiar! Moms have it rough - there are so many things to do and not enough hours in the day. I'm glad she brought it to your attention that it was time for you to take a break and have some fun!

Benita - I LOVE this memory! Sometimes I don't think there is anything moms won't do for their kids, and I bet yours looked adorable walking across that stage!

RJ - Thank you for sharing your touching story. I'm sorry you missed out on so many years with your mom, but it's so special that you had the chance to share that time with her that you did.

Lizzie - It's not stupid at all - and in fact, it made me a little teary eyed. Moms are the first ones to sacrifice for their children, and it's a labor of love, so they don't mind. I know it made her happy to be able to get you those 'perfectly cut' jeans!!

Sarah Lynne - I giggled while reading your comment. Bless your heart - I guess those McDonald's hamburgers were a rare treat for the doggies, too! ;-)

Jackie - My mother was present with both of my deliveries, too...and I wouldn't have had it any other way. It just goes to show that even as adults, we sometimes must have the nurturing that only our moms can give.

Nicole - What a beautiful memory, and a touching thing to be able to share with your daughter in a few years. Thank you for sharing with us!

Terrie - That is hilarious! I'm curious to know how your sister got everything all fixed up in time for prom...what a funny thing to look back on and laugh!

(Pictures) How Freckles is Adjusting to His New Home

Several days ago, I posted about our new puppy Freckles and how important it is to support your local animal shelter. I thought you might like to know how he's getting along in his new home. A few days after being introduced to the rest of the family, his quiet and shy demeanor disappeared. He's a spunky, funky little pup who loves attention! One of his favorite things to do is dart around Cooper's (our 3 year old lab) head barking and growling like he's going to eat Cooper for dinner. I don't think Cooper believes him...

As you can see, there's quite a difference in size. It's hilarious to watch Cooper play with Freckles, because even though he tries to act tough, he moves very carefully and is gentle - as if he knows he could hurt that little pup pretty easily. Freckles has also found that he has a love for biting and chewing things. Even though we purchased little squeaky toys for him, he likes to find his own things to chew on...

He is very vocal and if he hasn't been held and loved on for a while, he has a way of letting you know! He whines when he's lonely, when he needs to 'go,' and when he yawns. He's also getting the hang of going outside to visit the bathroom - thanks to some super-soft bacon flavored treats. I think all those treats are making him chunky...

Ok, maybe not. When he's all tired out from running around and chewing anything he can get in his little mouth, he's ready to get settled for bed. He's definitely not a 'lone sleeper,' and will not get settled until he's curled up next to someone...

He hasn't actually SAID so, but I think he digs his new home and goodness knows he's been given tons of attention and love! Hope you enjoyed the update - leave me links of your furry babies, too!

Say Hello to my Little Friend

My much beloved mutt, Cooper is going to have a new little brother next week! His name is Freckles and he's a chihuahua/dachshund mix. That's his petfinder photo below. We're getting him from our local animal shelter, which is operated by some of the most loving people! They are really dedicated to the animals and try their best to find excellent homes for them. If you're looking for a pet, you could find a breeder and pay a lot of money for a purebred dog - or you could save a life!

Our current dog, Cooper, was a rescue dog as well. He's about 3 and a half years old and he's been the most lovable, smartest and most loyal dog. He is so well behaved and although he's probably around 75lbs (lab mix), he still believes he's a lap dog. If you're thinking about adopting a pet, please consider your local animal shelter. Ours has so many dogs right now, they've cut the adoption fee in half. It breaks my heart to see so many dogs and cats without homes.

Even if you can't adopt an animal, why not take a donation in to your local animal shelter? They can always use dog and cat food, towels, cleaning supplies, and money. Give them a ring and find out what they need!

I can't tell you how much writing is a part of my life. It's how I earn a living, it's what I do in my spare time, and as if that weren't enough - I also keep journals that I write in on a regular basis. Writing and reading are as much a part of me as breathing and blinking - so finding Conduit Press on Etsy was a real treat for me. Talia, the owner, creates beautiful 'upcycled' journals, notebooks and other items that are unique and special.

I was lucky enough to be given the chance to review some special notebooks from Conduit Press, and to interview Talia. I hope you enjoy - and as you'll see at the end of this post, Talia has offered something very special for a lucky 2 Lil Muffins reader!

The Interview:

1. Tell us a little about yourself.

"Well, I'm a stay.work at home momma of a beautiful bouncing little 7 month old beauty named Griffin as well as a wacky teenager and a game-playing 8 year old. I spend my days reading Goodnight Moon and The Hungry Caterpillar and singing the ABC's in my best soprano (I'm an alto, so it's not a very good soprano). I spend my afternoons (baby nap times) tearing paper and cutting leather to make into beautiful handmade books that give me a catharsis I can't even explain.

I spend my evenings helping glue together shoebox book reports and editing freshman English term papers. I spend my nights cuddling with my Loving husband on the sofa whilst watching Lost (on a good day). I spend my life creating beautiful amazing useful too many words to describe people and things and I pretty much Love it."

2. Your shop contains quite a few 'upcycled' or recycled goods. What is your favorite creation to make?

"Really, every book is a joy to make. It really is. And every time I come up with a new design for a new book I fall in Love with that very one just a little bit more than the last. I've recently discovered that upcycling materials to make into books is so much more fulfilling than simply buying book board and paper from an art store because, well, you can really feel good about where it comes from, and where it's going. So, currently, my favorite creation to make is the leather journals I've been working on.

Leather is such a versatile material in so many ways and it's really beautiful. I'm using an upcycled leather from an upholstery shop in town so I know it's of extraordinary quality and had I not purchased this leather, it would have ended up in a dumpster. It feels really good to know that I was able to save something from adding to the pile of rubbish that we create daily without even thinking about it."

3. How long have you been creating paper goods, journals, etc?

"I've been making books in some form since I was a wee child honestly. My father bought me my first diary when I was about 7 and when I filled that up I stapled some pages together, tore a beautiful photography of a ballerina out of a magazine and called that a cover. Since then I've definitely grown with my skills though. ;)

I took an Artist's Books class my senior year of college (about 8 years ago now) and I never looked back. There is where I learned how to make archival books using archival materials and learned how to really sew a book together they way you're 'supposed to'. Ever since I've been reading Keith Smith books like crazy and teaching myself all the new ways in which to bind and create books. One can never really have enough books I think, because we never stop thinking to fill them."

4. Do you have a favorite piece in the shop now?

"I do. It's leather, of course. It's a maroon leather journal with a large round chartreuse bead sewn on the wraparound cover. I Love the colors of this journal. I Love maroon and chartreuse together for some reason. I like their opposition on the color wheel, and their brightness. I also Love the size of this journal (about 4x6) and that it's landscape and not portrait. It could be used as a photo album or a journal or even a sketchbook. The pages inside are a nice medium tooth white paper that will take almost any medium and the leather covers are nice and durable to protect whatever is inside."

5. In your opinion, what's the coolest thing about Conduit Press?

"For me, the coolest thing about CP is that it gives me the freedom to create things and share them with people I might never meet in real life. I Love creating and the art of creating things and being able to share them with the world, is really amazing. Aside from that, I think the coolest thing is that I am able to use a lot of materials in my art that would otherwise be trash, and saving our world from more trash is well, cool. :)"

She's right - it's totally cool and really admirable as well...not to mention the truly unique works of art that come out of the process!

The Review:

Talia sent me three small, upcycled notebooks to review. Made from recycled vinyl, thin typing paper and featuring a hemp closure - these notebooks are very pretty. What I love most about them is that they're so natural looking - very clean lines but rustic in a way. I immediately fell in love with them! When I'm not writing non-fiction articles for my clients, I'm writing fiction - and throughout the day, an idea will suddenly come to me for one element of a story or another. Usually, I jot them down somewhere and come back to them later. Well, I've started using these mini-notebooks to jot down my ideas.

I think it will be super-cool to have these little books full of inspirational thoughts and ideas, long after the ideas have transformed into stories and poems! What a neat little memento, right? The books are wonderful quality and I just love how they're so unique. I think these kinds of books would make a PERFECT gift for someone in your family who is a writer, or someone who enjoys writing their thoughts on a daily basis.

Review of KidZui Kid-Friendly Internet Browser

Since my children have been old enough to sit, they've been exposed to the computer. They both really love to play games online, watch funny videos and learn. However, the internet is very frightening for me when it comes to my kids.

I know the dangers that lurk around online, and I know there are a LOT of things my kids have to be protected from online. Since they're old enough now to type and want to utilize the search functions (which they're not allowed to do), my fears have increased.

Being unable to leave them for 2 seconds while they're on the computer - well, that's just not practical. But leaving them unsupervised while they play - absolutely not! That's why I'm so glad to have found Kidzui - the kid friendly internet browser. I decided to give Kidzui a try about a year ago. I saw it somewhere and read that every website, video, and game that children could access with Kidzui had been pre-approved as safe by Kidzui's moderators. Therefore, I created an account.

What the Kids Can Do:

When you sign your kid up for Kidzui, they create an avatar that they can dress, customize, etc. They create a login name and password that allows them to enter their own account. Once the browser is downloaded onto the computer, it's as easy as clicking a button and your child's account comes up. They can then search right in their browser, and you don't have to be afraid of what might pop up.

Your child can play games, search for information or videos and pictures, message other Kidzui members and even share videos and websites. I was VERY nervous when I heard that they could message other Kidzui members, until I looked at how it worked. They can't actually exchange typed messages - but they can suggest that members check out the pre-approved videos or web pages. They can send greetings and become friends, but there's no danger that your child could be talking to someone posing as a child, or that your child's information might reach anyone else online.

I tested Kidzui by typing certain addresses into the address bar. If the website has not been pre-approved, your child simply gets an error message and must move on to another website or video. It's fabulous the way it works!

Parental Features:

In addition to all the fun things your kid can do with Kidzui, there are a lot of parental features. You get your own account, where you can log in and check your child's activity online, and you can approve websites that you want your child to visit. You can also not allow your child to visit certain websites that may already be pre-approved by Kidzui, if you so desire. You can see who has befriended your child and everything about your child's account. If you want to remove a friend from your child's list, you can. You have complete control! You can even set it to send regular update messages to your email inbox.

How'd It Measure Up?

My kids absolutely love Kidzui. I went ahead and purchased the year's subscription (both kids get their own account, but I only paid one subscription fee.) They were able to search the internet and feel a little more independent without me standing over their shoulder or telling them they can't go here or there online. They loved creating their own avatars, and interacting - even if it was just getting a cute new video from a friend or watching a funny dancing banana!

The best thing is that they could access some of their favorite websites from their Kidzui browser - PBSkids, Poptropica, etc. I was highly impressed with Kidzui, and I feel like it was money WELL spent! I paid about $40 for a year's subscription - not a bad price at all. However, you don't have to pay for your kid to use Kidzui...they have a free option too.

Key Points:

Kidzui is safe for kids of all ages - everything is pre-approved by moderators.
You have the option of using the free and limited account or becoming a member for full access.
Your child can create their very own avatar, which is the picture that shows up when they send videos, websites or pictures to other members.
Through your parental account, you can view all stats and information about your child's online activity, friends, etc.

I would highly recommend Kidzui to anyone with children who want to play on the internet, find information, or look at videos. It's a safe alternative and although you still have to check in on your children often, you don't have to stand directly over them while they have fun. Sign up for a free account and check it out!

In addition to my love of jewelry, I also love hair accessories and other accessories like bags, shoes...the typical things that make the eyes of a woman sparkle! That's why I was so excited to come across Old School Leather Co. They're a smaller company - the perfect kind, because you know you're being dealt with by real people! The owners, Scott and Jami, were so nice and they're amazingly talented.

Their story is so touching and sweet, that I got a little teary-eyed when reading it! The husband and wife team took their individual talents and artistic abilities (and a little inspiration from Scott's mom and dad) and made an entire business. They have some of the most gorgeous leather items, too! I MUST have the purse you see below.

Scott and Jami sent me a hand-tooled leather barrette to review, and they were awesome enough to include a bit of leather with the individual tools stamped on it so I could see how the process worked. Wow - all I can say is those guys put a LOT of love and care (and work!) into their pieces.

What I love so much about the barrette is that one of my favorite ways to wear my hair is in a ponytail...which can get pretty boring after a while. This barrette instantly dresses up the pony tail and can be used to create gorgeous french twists and half-ponytails. Plus - BONUS - it goes with absolutely everything!

It's so simple to use, too and looks really elegant and cute. I am in love with this barrette and I have a feeling I'm going to be shopping at Old School Leather Co. for holidays and birthdays, because I've gotten several compliments on it...especially when I revealed that it was completely handmade! 1. Tell us a little about yourself.

Well lets see, my birth name is Cynthia, which I changed to Cyndy and then about 6 years ago, changed to Cyd, which is what I go by now. So, I guess my name keeps getting shorter, who knows, I may eventually end up with just "C". (lol) I am a lover of all things nature related, I adore gardening, bird watching and just being outdoors as much as possible. I currently live in a forested area of Portland, Oregon, where it's very green and beautiful! I have also lived in both Arizona and Alaska. I am a long time self taught artist, I have worked with various mediums, including watercolor painting, tile/glass mosaics and now jewelry.

2. How long have you been designing jewelry?

I have been making jewelry really since I was a kid, I use to make beaded earrings and necklaces with my Mom. I got more serious about it 2 years ago when I opened my etsy shop. When I first opened my shop I was also running my gardening business, so I had 2 businesses going at the same time for awhile. After one year of selling on etsy, I was able to discontinue my gardening business and make jewelry full time, which was really great.

3. Where does your inspiration come from?

I get my inspiration from Nature, always nature! I am continually amazed by the natural world, and love nothing more than spending time being totally immersed in a rain forest, and seeing the abundance of life there, really love that!

4. Do you have a favorite piece?

Not really, but I am fond of the "Blue meadow Necklace" which is a newer design of mine.

5. What is the coolest thing about Botanical Bird designs?

The coolest thing, I would have to say is that by having my shop, it has allowed me to meet many online friends, which is really sweet, and it has also afforded me a certain amount of freedom in my life, and really what artist doesn't love that?

I could close my eyes, choose an item and know that I'd be happy with it, no matter which one I chose - her stuff is that good! Me: "I did know that! They're called fraternal twins."

Lil Muffin: "Yeah, because my friends David and Daniel do not look alike. David doesn't have a cocktail and Daniel does have a cocktail. Plus, David has a different nose."

Me: "Daniel has a cocktail?"

Lil Muffin: "Yeah, and plus, he has a different nose."

Me: "What do you mean he has a cocktail?"

Lil Muffin: "You know, that piece of hair sticking down in the back of his head."

Me: *hides snickers* "Oh...you mean that he has a rat tail."

My Family Ties Review and Gerbera Daisy Clips Giveaway (CLOSED)

My kids wear uniforms to school, so everyone is dressed in the exact same thing. Because we can't use clothing and clothing styles to do it, we have to establish our individuality a little bit differently.

My daughter prefers cute hair clips, jewelry and accessories that really express her personality - that's why I was thrilled for her to try out some handmade hair accessories from My Family Ties on Etsy. About the Designer:

My name is Brandi. I'm a 35 year old mom to a 3 year old little girl and a wife to a great guy! I come from a wildly creative family with people who can do everything from draw and paint to sew and arrange floral pieces. I have been making childrens' hair accessories for a bit over a year. While this is relatively new to me I love doing it!

I draw, cut, and stitch everything by hand. My inspiration comes from all things kid related...story books, coloring books, characters, and lots of suggestions from people who ask "can you do this in felt?". My favorite things change constantly but I am rather fond of the Birthstone Flower clips right now.

These are my sister's creations which leads me to what I think is great about our shop ~ we are 3 generations of women who each have something unique to bring to the shop. Our shop keeps us in touch on a weekly, even daily basis. I love that my middle sister and I have developed a common ground and that we keep each other motivated :)

Usually, clips and hair accessories will irritate my daughter after a day of wearing them and she's ready to yank them out as soon as she gets home from school, but not these! I also noticed that they held a lot better than some of the other clips we have - which is good because it keeps the hair in place and looks great all day. Moonrise Eco-Friendly Jewelry Review and Giveaway (CLOSED)

I do a significant amount of work for blogs and companies that are eco-friendly, so whenever I get the chance to review a product that is created with the environment in mind, it's a joy. When that product is sparkling, beautiful jewelry - I'm even more thrilled! I've recently gotten to know a bit about Moonrise, an eco-friendly jewelry company, and I'm so excited to talk to you all about it!

Having been featured on The Today Show and Lucky Magazine, among others, Moonrise is a women-owned company that places priority on fair trade materials, recycled materials, and ethically-obtained materials. What does this mean for you and me? It means we can wear this beautiful jewelry, knowing that it hasn't harmed the environment and that the individuals who provided the gemstones, metals and beads have been fairly compensated for their work. I don't know about you, but that makes me feel pretty darn good!

Every piece of jewelry is handmade in the Moonrise studio, based on the eastern shore of Virginia. I have to tell you - this company has some of the most stunning jewelry I've seen - absolutely PERFECT for gifts and for when you deserve a little treat of your own. Liz, the founder and principal designer, is so talented and friendly. She recently sent me a pair of Jupiter earrings to review and I'd like to share my thoughts with you.

The Review:

The first thing I'll tell you is that the packaging the earrings came in is gorgeous! Anyone receiving a gift of Moonrise jewelry is going to be impressed...

I love this box - and it was beautifully wrapped in an elegant ribbon. Then, on the inside...

They say presentation is everything. Well, Moonrise already gets a 10 in that department! The gift box is absolutely gorgeous and I would be proud to give anyone a gift from Moonrise Jewelry. But, the packaging is only a small aspect, because the jewelry inside is truly what makes you swoon!

Can I just say - look at the gorgeous detail on the small silver beads and dividers!!! These Jupiter earrings are made from recycled glass, with fair trade fine silver links and sterling silver ear wires. I am absolutely in love with these earrings.

At first, I was a bit worried because they looked like they would be super-heavy, but they're not at all! They're just heavy enough to create that beautiful dangling when you move, and they really catch the eye and sparkle in the light. I wore these earrings to a large family dinner and received numerous comments and a request to borrow them!! Also, it was fun to tell people that they were made from recycled glass, because everyone was pretty impressed with that.

Review of Tickled Tutu on Etsy

Not too long ago, I was lucky enough to win a tutu from Tickled Tutu on Etsy and was so excited because my daughter loves prancing around in different costumes and outfits. In fact, for her last birthday, she got a huge armoire full of dress-up clothes. (Click on links to see pics.)

Anyway, Kristen, the owner of Tickled Tutu, was so nice. She sent the tutu out quickly after finding out the correct size, and my daughter was THRILLED. Not only did Kristen send a huge, full and beautiful tutu, but there was a gorgeous matching bow. I was also really glad to see that Kristen sent instructions for keeping the tutu wrinkle-free and cleaning it, since the tulle shouldn't be washed and dried in the regular fashion.

That's my little one above, being Miss Priss! Well, wouldn't you know...not long after she got the tutu (and because she refused to take it off), she dropped a big glob of chocolate pudding right on it. Remembering Kristen's instructions, I just spot cleaned it with a towel and the pudding came right off with no problem. She was also absolutely right about using the Downy Wrinkle Release and hanging the tutu in the bathroom during a shower - both worked.

My daughter is in love with this tutu, and wears it religiously when she wants to dance around and feel pretty. It's just precious! There are tons of other great items in the Tickled Tutu shop as well...

I love that she has matching outfits - isn't this one just gorgeous? Kristen is so talented, and she manages to create these gorgeous things even though she's a stay at home mommy of a little boy!

She even makes the little slippers - and there are bows, accessories, and tons of other great goodies available at her shop. I would highly recommend the Tickled Tutu to anyone who has a little princess at home, or who needs a gift for a special little girl in their life. Kristen even sent me a great coupon with the tutu!

Crystal Light Hunger Satisfaction vs Kellogg's Special K20 Protein Water

I am a big fan of sweet tea, and occasionally like Coke or Dr. Pepper, but I cannot stand water. Knowing that I need it, I try to drink as many glasses a day as possible, but when enough is enough, I use Crystal Light. It gives me a refreshing drink without all the calories and sugar that sweet tea and sodas have. Recently, I tried the Crystal Light Hunger Satisfaction Strawberry Banana and then when I saw the Kellogg's Special K20 Protein Water, I knew I had to compare the two. So, here goes...

Crystal Light Hunger Satisfaction Strawberry Banana

This drink mix works just like the others - it comes in individual packets that are designed to be mixed into a 20 ounce bottle of water - or just a little less.

The difference is that this mix has 5g of fiber and 3g of protein and it's designed to help you feel fuller for a longer period of time. This can help you avoid those urges to snack and could possibly help you succeed in a weight loss plan. There are 30 calories in one drink, and 0 fat.

The first thing I noticed is that like most Crystal Light drinks, it's ground very fine so it mixes almost instantly into the water, and dissolved completely. The drink is a slight bit thicker than the regular crystal light, so you actually feel like you're putting something into your stomach. For me, it really did make me feel fuller than just a regular crystal light drink. Plus, I really love the flavor of the strawberry banana. The drink was an instant hit with me!

You can take this anywhere and when you start to feel a craving that would ordinarily send you looking for the candy bar aisle, you can just mix up a bottle of this. It's excellent when it's chilled, and is so refreshing! I absolutely love this drink.

Kellogg's Special K20 Protein Water Pink Lemonade

This drink mix works just like the crystal light - it's to be mixed into a 16.9 ounce bottle of water, but a 20 ounce bottle works too, it just makes a bit lighter flavor. It has 5g of protein and 5g of fiber, and 30 calories. So, compared to the Crystal Light, it's about the same as far as nutrition, but has a bit more protein in it.

The first thing I noticed about this one was that it didn't completely mix into the water, so I had little 'grains' floating on top of the water, which put me off a little. I prefer the way that the Crystal Light mixed perfectly into the water and dissolved completely. That's not such a big deal, though. The flavor of the pink lemonade is good, with a bit of a strange after-taste. Maybe that's a little unfair, since I really love the strawberry banana flavor of Crystal Light and don't typically drink Pink Lemonade a lot. Kellogg's Special K20 Protein Water also comes in Strawberry Kiwi, which I'm going to try if I can get past the grainy pieces floating on top.

Aside from all that, the flavor was good and like the Crystal Light, it does feel like you're putting something into your stomach and holds off the cravings.

Other Differences and Similarities:

The Crystal Light only contains 20mg of sodium while the Kellogg's contains 40mg. They both have 6g of carbs, and they're both excellent substitutes for sodas, tea or other coffees with a lot of sugar and empty calories. All in all though, I'd choose the Crystal Light over the Kellogg's. The flavor was more appealing to me, and I keep coming back to the way they dissolved...and I prefer the Crystal Light!

Etsy Spotlight: Elegant Hobbies

I'm past due for another great Etsy Spotlight, but I've found a wonderful shop that I definitely think needs highlighting. This shop specializes in cozy, lovable and huggable little...monkeys! Introducing Elegant Hobbies and their fun, creative sock monkeys...

Isn't this little guy adorable? This is the perfect gift for a little boy or girl who needs something to cuddle while they go on the daily adventures of an imaginative child. This one isn't made with any plastic or metal pieces, although it's important to be sure it's safe for your particular child, of course.

The seller is a fabulously talented mommy of 2 from Louisiana - so we're neighbors! What I love most about these adorable monkeys is that each one seems to have their own personality! Check out the little scarf and matching hat this purple one is wearing - she seems to be very fashion conscious!

The great thing about Elegant Hobbies is that their prices are great. Most of the monkeys in the shop are around $22, which isn't bad for a durable and adorable friend that your child can carry around for a very long time. Some are even less expensive. Another of my favorite things...

The Party Monkey!! I think this is a genius idea. You can order a pack of 'blank' sock monkeys that are ready to receive their own personalities and decorations. Isn't this the perfect idea for a sleepover craft or birthday party activity? Little girls and little boys would have such a great time making their monkeys their own!

Review of EZ Combs (As Seen on TV)

So I NEVER buy anything that I see on infomercials, because I can't hold it in my hands and look it over before I pay for it. I had seen the EZ Combs commercials and really thought they were cute and looked easy to use, but still didn't buy them. When I saw them at a local store, I thought hmmmm. Well, I went ahead and bought them.

I have to admit - they're really cute! That's what attracted me to them in the first place. It seemed like a quick way to pin up your hair without using a pony tail or clippie and it looked elegant and pretty. They're also really easy to put into your hair by yourself. Also, they look really great at first - creating the different styles is easy and I really like the way the beads look in the hair.

The problem? Within 10 minutes, they come out of my hair. I even referred to the handy little step-by-step styling guide that came with the combs. They hold for a little while and then one side slips out and my hair goes tumbling down. Maybe my hair is too thick for them? But the guide does say:

"Best of all, EZ Combs work on any hair type...thin, thick, curly or straight."

Well, they don't work on my hair! I'm pretty disappointed because I really do think they're cute and a good idea, but I'm really unhappy with the way they hold. I DEFINITELY need something that is going to hold my hair for more than 15 minutes at a time. What a shame! Have any of you tried these? Were you happy with the performance? As for me...

I did notice as I looked up other reviews that they have a similar product called HairZing. Has anyone had any experiences with this product? If so, let me know how you liked it.

Rosebud Lips Ethereal Beauty Rosebud Headband Giveaway (CLOSED)

Wow. I have found an absolutely fabulous shop called Rosebud Lips on Etsy. The seller, Lauren, is so nice - she didn't hesitate a bit when I told her I'd love to do a giveaway with her! She's a stay-at-home mommy of a precious baby girl and she is amazingly talented.

Every single one of Lauren's headbands and necklaces are so feminine and pretty, and many of the head clips can also double as brooches! Most of the headbands can be worn by adults or children - which would be fabulous for me since my little girl steals all of my hair things and jewelry anyway!

About the Designer:

Rosebud Lips. That's the nickname that my mom gave me when I was a little girl, and then my daughter (her grand-daughter). All three generations shared the Rosebud Lips. I have always been creative, and learned to sew at a young age. I was taught by my grandmother (Nana) and my mom (Tama). I have always loved fashion, and at a young age moved to New York City. I had the opportunity to intern for designer Cynthia Rowley, which was an amazing experience.

To tell you why I became a designer would have to be because of my sweet memories of being a little girl (about 4) and dancing around in my Nana's silk bed sheets (my cape), adorned with her costume jewelry. I felt like a princess. My Nana has collected jewelry from my family generations back, and I felt like each piece had a story. This inspired me to use antiques in my pieces. I love textures, antiques, fabric and jewelry.

Together, these form my concepts for my collection-- Making every woman feel beautiful I started the company in 2009, shortly after my mom passed away from Cancer. She was my best friend, and my biggest supporter. She was an artist herself, and she told me to follow my dreams and be creative. This motivated me to leave the marketing/PR world that I worked in for over 5 years. She has changed the course of my life, and I'm so excited for what the future holds.

Set Hope Free is a project that I'm so passionate about. It's about redeeming women who have been held captive and have been sold into slavery. Human trafficking doesn't just happen in other countries, but in our cities. Every item that is sold through Rosebud Lips contributes to a care package that is being sent to help these women reclaim their dignity. To make them feel beautiful again. Until recently, I had no idea what 'steampunk' jewelry even was! Now, I'm completely sold - I love how each piece is so unique and whimsical. I've had a wonderful opportunity to interview the fabulous and talented seller behind The Steampunk Trunk on Etsy - and test out a gorgeous necklace she sent me. Let's meet the mastermind behind the gorgeous jewelry available at this shop.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I'm a stay at home Mother of 3 wonderful young men whom I am very proud of. The oldest (22) is in School for plumbing, the middle (19) is in the US Army stationed in the states but with every phone call from him my heart sinks at the thought of him telling me has been deployed...Thankfully that hasn't happened yet. My youngest is 10, he is so much fun and loves to try to help me in the studio which is right smack dab in the middle of our home.

You have such beautiful and unique designs. What inspires you to create a piece?

I let my components inspire me, Ive never been on to sit down and pump out a bunch of pieces just because I have the parts. I will let pieces sit for months before they are complete and trust me there are many pieces get torn apart if they are not just right, esp the pocketbooks. The actually take months to complete from conception to listing.

How long have you been creating steampunk jewelry and accessories?

I have been making jewelry for about 15 years and really had no idea what steampunk was. I had made many, many pieces of what some would call steampunk but at the time I called it altered art. An Etsy customer of mine steered me straight, I thank her often:)

Do you have a favorite piece?

I sold a piece many months ago that I just adored, it was an antique pocket watch case which I filled with a pocket watch face, a small main spring, the gorgeous gold hands from the watch and filled it with Jewelers resin. It was called Pieces of Time...it pained me when it sold but I was proud too.

In your opinion, what's the coolest thing about the Steampunk Trunk items?

The coolest thing about "The Trunk" is that my pieces are so unique. I have some very cutting edge items that you will only find here...the pocketbooks and the Extreme Rotating Cufflinks are just a couple. I am working on some new designs that will hopefully be released over the next week or so...stay tuned. "You never know what you'll find in The Trunk."

The Review:

She is absolutely right - the pieces are so unique and gorgeous! I absolutely love them. I was sent a vintage typewriter key necklace that I think is so unique. It has the vintage look I love and has gotten so many comments on it's uniqueness and beauty.

Isn't this really cool? Mine had an asterisk and I think the fact that she sent the typewriter key necklace was perfect, since I'm a writer. It's a necklace that I'm really going to cherish for a long time! I have to tell you that the quality of the jewelry from The Steampunk Trunk is fabulous. You can certainly be sure that it will last for a long, long time.

Best and Worst Valentine's Gifts Ever + Valentine's Day Movie

To celebrate Valentine's Day - both the movie and the holiday, Ashton Kutcher and more of the all-start cast of the movie have created a little YouTube campaign. It's a fun way to help people stay away from the bad Valentine's gifts and go for the good ones. Basically, they're going to compile a list of the worst and best Valentine's gifts ever, but they want you to help.

Girlz Lyfe Review and $25 Gift Certificate Giveaway (CLOSED)

Sprinkles, sparkles and jewelry - how can you possibly go wrong with that combination? You can't! Adding something colorful and eye-catching to my jewelry box is ALWAYS fun and Girlz Lyfe has a huge variety of jewelry that meets that criteria. The girlz there are as sweet as their jewelry, and sent me a Heart with Sprinkles necklace and a Love ring to review.

Guess what - those are *real* sprinkles inside that necklace - but don't worry, they're sealed up completely! Isn't it absolutely beautiful? I love how this necklace is eye-catching, fresh and so pretty - plus...it matches anything! My first thought was that this was the perfect Valentine's necklace because it symbolized love and sweet stuff!

This ring is super-duper cute, and it's adjustable, so one size fits all. It's silver-plated and so sparkly that it really does draw attention. I love how the surface is smooth and coated, but it still looks like you should be able to shake your hand and send sparkles all over the place! I love BOTH pieces and...so does my daughter! Ha!

Serious Ouchie + Is It Just MY Boy?

So...my son is a super-hyper, never-stopping, 100MPH kinda kid. I've been reassured by friends and family that it's a boy thing, and of course, my little girl is laid-back and for the most part, relatively calm.

Last night, as he was running through the kitchen, bouncing into walls and crawling across the ceiling, he slipped and banged his chin right on the corner of one of the kitchen chairs...HARD. After a few stray tears and some ice, I was able to survey the damage.

Yes. I had multiple heart attacks, but was glad it wasn't worse. It's so dark, though, that it looks like he has ink on his chin! We keep a 'boo-boo book' where we put pictures of his various nicks and scrapes. Papa Muffin started this (why do boys think injuries are 'cool') so my son would be able to look fondly back and remember every one of his mishaps. *rolls eyes*

In fact, even during ER trips (nothing too serious, by the way), he's there, snapping the camera. What is it about boys? Are they just completely and totally fearless? This one wasn't the scariest for me. It was about a month ago when my son cut his foot wide open on a shard of glass and was bleeding copious amounts - or at least it looked like copious amounts to me! Poor mothers - we get a very regular heart-check when we have sons, don't we? What has been your scariest 'boo-boo' and is (are) your son (kids) the same way?

Etsy Spotlight: Bullfinch and Barbury

I have a fabulous treat lined up for you guys on this Etsy Spotlight! I may have mentioned a time or two or twelve that my favorite jewelry is bracelets. As I browsed through the fabulous sellers and shops on Etsy, I came across Bullfinch and Barbury - and some of the most fabulous bracelets I've ever seen!

Look at the rich, bejeweled tones of the enamel that has been painted on these bracelets! They are quite eye-catching, but the seller has more than just bracelets. Fabulous pins and necklaces are available in the shop as well.

What I really love about every single item in this shop is that they're unique and so striking - like the colors are just jumping out at you! They're so elegant and versatile that they can be worn with faded jeans or a dinner dress.

This shop is a true gem of Etsy and I hope you will all visit and at least favorite the item you like the best! If you purchase anything, be sure to let the seller know that 2 Lil Muffins sent you. Pink Lemonade Asymmetrical Necklace Giveaway (CLOSED)

I don't really know why asymmetrical necklaces appeal to me - maybe because they don't look 'cookie-cutter,' and I've always had an odd taste when it comes to jewelry. That's why I created this necklace. It features pink glass beads and a large silver-colored wire decoration with tiny 'bling' in the center of the flowers.

Barking Maddison Customized Leather Cuff Bracelet Review and Giveaway (CLOSED)

Bracelets are my absolute favorite type of jewelry! I love them all - dainty and sparkly, chunky and funky, bright and earth-toned. My favorite bracelet usually changes from week to week - and I'll admit that I have a bit of an obsession. Now, I have a new love that doesn't look likely to change soon! Barkingmaddison from Etsy sent me a custom leather letter word cuff that I. ABSOLUTELY. ADORE.

Forgive my terrible picture-taking skills (obviously I only took the above one - lol) for the moment and let me tell you how much I love this bracelet. First of all, when you get one of these cuff bracelets, you can completely customize it. You choose the color, the words, and you give your wrist measurements so that it can be created specifically for you! I chose pink, and the words 'To Live is To Write.'

You can choose 1 to 3 words that will be repeated, or you can choose up to 20 words - so song lyrics, your kids' names, a poem - pretty much anything can be put on your bracelet. Niclana will totally create your bracelet just for you. It has a snap closure, and is the perfect chunky bracelet for any outfit - plus it's not likely that anyone else will have a bracelet like yours, which is something I love!

I am absolutely enamored with this bracelet and have gotten so many compliments about it! It's such a great accessory and can be paired with jeans, a cute skirt, a summer dress - whatever you want. It's a definite statement piece with a literal statement.

I can't tell you how pleased I am with the bracelet. There are a ton of other great handmade items in Niclana's shop, too. Based in New York, Niclana often creates items that are inspired by vintage items, and her travels to various flea markets and other places also help her create her fabulous pieces.

Etsy Spotlight: WhimsyCouture

Welcome to our very 1st Etsy Spotlight! I'm really excited about the first seller - she is so talented! She runs a shop selling patterns to make adorable clothes for children and adults - and I saw more than clothes too. I'm talking boots, mittens, and a ton of other things. Denise, from Whimsy Couture has not only offered to answer some questions for us, but as you'll see at the end of this post, she has generously offered something exclusively for 2 Lil Muffins readers! Here's a little more about Denise...

How do you create these patterns, and what is the inspiration?

Since I started sewing a long time ago it comes natural to me to work with all kinds of patterns and get frustrated sometimes about how confusing some of the commercial ones are. I started learing to make patterns from a pattern-making course! I got interesting insights in all of this and did my part to learn the necessary things to actually start making patterns.

I measure a lot, I compare a lot and I sew a lot until a pattern "sits" right! Then I have wonderful pattern testers that give me the last needed OKAY so I feel confident offering them to the public. My inspiration lays in all things around me, my kids, the nature, the wonderful fabric that's available!

Is this something you do in your spare time or are you able to devote all of your time to creating beautiful patterns?

It started taking up my spare time and evolved to a (almost) full time job. Luckily my family is very supportive and enjoys seing my creations and what my customers make with my patterns.

Tell us a little about your family and where you live!

I try to keep my family very private but so much I will share: I have 2 kids under the age of 6 and a wonderful husband and dog who all need to be there for me to function just right! We live in the outskirts of Washington D.C. and love it!

So what is the coolest thing about Whimsy Couture patterns?

Well, my customers say that they are easy to read and to use. That my pictures are very helpful and the fit is great! Thank you, customers!

So, a novice (like me - haha) could create the clothing from these patterns, then?

Most of my patterns are very easy to follow and a novice sewer will be able to achieve a pretty garment with a little effort. Some patterns are a little more detailed and it would be helpful if the sewer has already gained some experience in that area.

What's your favorite of all of your patterns?

I don't have a favorite but I do like kids clothing patterns the best since I sew for my little ones a lot!

How long have you been creating patterns?

Since about 1 year! Before that I offered custom clothing for kids which I started doing again. I love sewing and I guess I just can't get enough. ;)
